Music Marketing Blog Post #1

My team and I were assigned one of our biggest projects yet. The objective is to create a make-believe music artist and a marketing campaign to plan and launch the artist's upcoming career. In addition, we were to create a PowerPoint presentation that would include all the information gathered in the research and a music video. Below are the steps my group and I took and the decisions we made going into the project.

First, my teammate Luis lined up to receive our mystery music genre. My group ended up getting Pop Funk/ Hip-Hop. After receiving our genre, we were sent four songs to our email. We were to choose one of the four songs and include that song in our music video. This song would serve as the artist's first single. Before we could choose the song, we had to conceptualize what our artist would look like and whether the artist would be a boy or a girl. We had a vision for our artist to look similar to my group member Mariano and that his apparel would consist of a black biker jacket, beige pants, and grandpa shoes. One of the songs named Colors by Black Puma really fit the image of our artist and resonated with him. We also envisioned a really cool music video we could do that would fit perfectly with the song and its lyrics!

The next step was to conduct some research on marketing and distribution practices in the form of case studies. We were to research two record companies and two artists/bands from each company for a total of four artists/bands. We picked Childish Gambino and A$AP Rocky from RCA Records. We decided to do some research on Black Pumas since we were going to use one of their songs, and another artist from the same record label, Chicano Batman. To work as efficiently as possible, we all researched different artists simultaneously first and researched the last one together. Below are 2 images showing the information we gathered during our case study:

The next step was to create our artist's campaign. We first had to come up with a name for the artist and a name for his first single. I came up with the name Renzo Apollo and the new name of the song was going to be Meadow of Green. I suggested the artist have a background as a minor YouTube gaming content creator and that he could use this as a way to market his brand. We all shared ideas and put them all together in a Google Document.

We are now in the process of recording our music video and later editing it. We chose to film our music video over the weekend since it was a reliable time for everyone. This week in class, we chose not to waste time obviously and we got a head start on our presentation. We were told today in class there was a change in the project and that now we have to include pre-recorded audio in each slide replacing the original idea of having to do a 15-minute oral presentation in front of the class. My group and I, however, are confident that we are heading in the right direction with this project!
